Our Story

Keweenaw Brewing Company is the hops-induced vision of Dick Gray and Paul Boissevain. Dick, a Michigan Tech graduate was looking for a way to return to the Copper Country. Paul, meanwhile, was introduced to - and seduced by - the crystal clear waters of nearby Lake Superior, the beauty of the surrounding area, and the small-town charm of Houghton, Michigan. The two men, whose passion for beer runs as deep as Superior, are the driving force behind Keweenaw Brewing Company.

The "KBC", as it's referred to by the locals, is a microbrewery, as such, no food is served. As a microbrewery, we sell our beer wholesale (across Michigan and Wisconsin) and in our taproom. The KBC taproom is located smack in the middle of historic downtown Houghton. Its rustic barn-wood interior welcomes all with cozy, homey comfort. A large fireplace area, outfitted with couches and footrests, completes the inviting scene. For the truly obsessed, the fragrance of hops, the heat from the kettles of our 16 bbl brewing system, offer further reasons to venture this far north for a visit.

Our beers change with the seasons. We always offer our four core ales: Pick Axe Blonde, Red Jacket Amber, Lift Bridge Brown, and Widow Maker Black. Five more of our beer selections may be found on any one of our ten taps at any given time; along with a home-brewed birch, root or ginger beer. Currently, four of our beers - the Pick Axe Blonde Ale, Red Jacket Amber Ale, Lift Bridge Brown Ale, and the Widow Maker Black Ale - are available for sale in canned six-packs at our taproom or at retailers across Michigan and Wisconsin. We're always expanding, so if you don't see us in your favorite store or bar, be sure to ask for us by name.
